Taylor Swift’s Triumph as Person of the Year Sparks Far-Right Conspiracy Theories. Right-Wing Critics Concoct Conspiracy Theories Around Taylor Swift’s Person of the Year Title
Time magazine’s declaration of Taylor Swift as the 2023 Person of the Year has ignited a firestorm of conspiracy theories from right-wing commentators. Swift, known for her alignment with the pro-choice movement and vocal opposition to former\ President Donald Trump, has become a target for baseless political speculation.
End of Wokeness, a far-right account with nearly 2 million followers, absurdly credited Swift with the influence to lead a “cult-like following” into doing anything, including referencing the infamous “poisoned Kool-Aid.” The account then ominously predicted Swift’s entry into politics, insinuating plans for her as a political weapon in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
Former Trump immigration adviser Stephen Miller echoed far-right fear-mongering, tweeting that what’s happening with Taylor Swift is not organic.
As Trump surrogates joined the chorus, alt-right figure Jack Posobiec, retweeted by Trump in the past, claimed the “Taylor Swift girlboss psyop” had been fully activated. Posobiec also took a swipe at Travis Kelce and speculated on Swift’s supposed future endeavors in politics.
Jeffrey Clark, a former Trump DOJ official charged in connection with efforts to overturn the 2020 election, reposted Posobiec’s comment, expressing concern about ceding culture to the Left. He pondered a dystopian future where cultural icons like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Taylor Swift run for office together.
This isn’t the first time right-wing commentators have fixated on Swift’s success, previously scrutinizing her relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The backlash underscores the deep divide between Swift’s cultural influence and the right-wing narrative.
