Warner Bros. Pictures and Fathom Events have announced the release date for the highly anticipated documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. This film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, is set to premiere in select U.S. theaters on September 21, with an encore showing on September 25, which would have been the late actor’s birthday.
The documentary, which garnered critical acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, delves into the life of Christopher Reeve, best known for his iconic portrayal of Superman. Reeve’s rise from an unknown actor to a global superstar and his definitive performance as Clark Kent/Superman set a high standard for superhero films.
After a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 left him paralyzed, Reeve transformed into a dedicated activist for spinal cord injury research and disability rights. His work in these fields, coupled with his continued contributions to cinema, underscored his resilience and commitment to making a difference.
Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, expressed his honor in bringing Reeve’s story to audiences, stating, “This documentary reveals what made him a true hero, on- and off-screen.” Fathom Events’ CEO Ray Nutt echoed this sentiment, highlighting the documentary’s exploration of the real superhero behind Superman.
The film features never-before-seen home movies and personal archives, along with first-time interviews with Reeve’s three children and Hollywood colleagues. Produced by Lizzie Gillett, Robert Ford, and Bonhôte, with executive producers Connor Schell, Libby Geist, and others, the documentary promises an intimate look at Reeve’s extraordinary life and legacy.
Following its U.S. debut, an international release is also planned, with dates to be announced. This documentary not only celebrates Reeve’s cinematic achievements but also honors his indomitable spirit and advocacy.
Stay tuned for further updates on this inspiring film and its international rollout.
